Women warned after Papakura attack
Women in South Auckland are being warned to beware when answering the door to strangers after a Papakura woman was subjected to a prolonged sex attack in her own home.
A line of police tape was the only sign of a major police investigation as forensics experts turned over the victim's flat on Friday.
Neighbours say they heard nothing during the attack around midday on Thursday and didn't see the offender who was dressed in a suit and tie when he knocked on the woman's door.
The inquiry head, Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Grimstone, says for all intents and purposes the offender, dressed in a suit and tie, could be a businessman. He says the attack is not something you would attribute to someone so well dressed.
The 41-year-old woman lived alone. Police say her attacker was armed and threatened to kill her if she called police.
The intruder tricked his way into the woman's flat where police say he stripped her naked and repeatedly sexually violated her in an attack that lasted at least two hours.
Police are appealing for sightings of the well-dressed clean-shaven Polynesian offender in his early to mid 30s.
And because of the apparent random nature of the attack, police are warning local women to take care when opening the door to strangers
"It's a very disgusting and despicable attack on a female on her own home in broad daylight and this offender must be caught," says Grimstone.
A team of 30 officers is now working on the inquiry. They will spend the weekend interviewing the victim.
She is said to be in a very fragile state of mind after her ordeal.
